How to Set Up an Outdoor Movie Theater at Home

June 26, 2015 By Casey Danton

If you’re nostalgic for the drive-in days of the past, you may be able to easily recreate the experience right at home. These warm nights are perfect for enjoying a movie screening under the stars with family and friends.

Get permission: Before you start setting up, check to make sure that your brilliant idea is actually permittable. Run the idea by your neighbors to find out if they have concerns about noise levels at night (and if they’d like to attend the screening). The last thing you want is the police knocking on your door right when you’ve gotten to the good part of the movie.

Consider the space: Where will you be projecting the show? Your driveway is a great option because it provides a level surface for equipment and is likely close to a power source in the garage. Otherwise, look for a flat surface anywhere around your home. If you’re putting the screen in the backyard, you’ll likely need a lengthy, heavy-duty extension cord, and a power strip.

Arrange the seats: Seating options vary based on location. If you’re setting up on the driveway, you’ll need lawn chairs (or perhaps a comfy old couch). If you’re in the backyard, you can simply spread out a few picnic blankets and throw pillows.

Gather your equipment: The essentials are: a screen, a projector, and speakers. When choosing a projector, focus on brightness and throw distance rating. For audio, go with an all-weather, two-channel system. If your theater is far from the house, make sure you have some form of lighting.

Bring on the refreshments: No movie experience is complete without snacks. And nothing beats an old-fashioned popcorn machine! But of course, since you’re running the show, anything goes: ice cream floats, s’mores, popsicles (or healthier options). The options are limitless.

Now just call up some friends, family, and neighbors and plan a star-studded evening under the stars.

Home for the Holidays: Your Favorite Holiday Movie Homes Come to Life

      December 22, 2014 By CENTURY 21

Christmas movies are one of the best things about the holiday season. No matter who you are, you have a favorite holiday movie. There’s a movie for every child, every adult, every mood, and every personality. Holiday movies have a way of getting you in the Christmas spirit faster than you can say, “Santa, I know him!”

Whether you’re Home Alone or surrounded by family for The Holiday, these homes will surely make you nostalgic for your favorite movie.

      1. This home is reminiscent of the McCallister residence; it’s even located in the same town! We’re sure it comes with its own blueprint plan to ward off intruders, but hopefully you won’t need it. Make sure you have all your belongings (and children) before leaving on any holiday vacations.

      2. The Griswolds could live here. With a light show this hefty, make sure you don’t pull a Clark and have the lights fail on you. If you love these over-the-top decorations, then you may need a “Jelly of the Month” club membership to get you through the holidays.

      3. It may not be as drafty or as old as the Bailey residence, but this home will surely leave you thinking that It’s a Wonderful Life. There is space to host the best Christmas dinner ever and there’s even a guest room for Clarence. It may be difficult to lasso the moon, but the backyard has enough space to practice.

      4. Similar to little Susan’s dream home, this precious house is bound to bring miracles (even if it’s not located on 34th Street). Santa will have no problem finding this home on Christmas night. He made it all possible, after all!

      5. Is that a leg lamp we see in the window? No, probably not, but this home looks like it could tell A Christmas Story. It’s not a good idea to stick your tongue to any light posts outside, but throw on your bunny pajamas and try not to shoot your eye out on Christmas morning.

Watching your favorite Christmas movies can get you and your family into the holiday spirit! These homes are a perfect reminder of why you adore curling up by a fire and tuning on these timeless films.

Carrie, Seinfeld, and Friends: NYC Apartments Straight From the Screen.

      November 4, 2014 By CENTURY 21

It’s the city that never sleeps, the concrete jungle where dreams are made up, and the backdrop for so many iconic television shows and movies. If you take a walk or hail a cab you may spot one of these iconic apartments.

      1. Carrie Bradshaw wrote, slept, and stored sweaters in the oven of this charming West Village townhouse. We can picture her falling in love, hosting Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, and storing her Manolos here. We had to find an image of the townhouse next door because the Google Street View is blurred out for privacy reasons.

      2. You could find Holly Golightly sleeping in this Lexington Avenue apartment with Cat. We could just imagine Ms. Golightly sitting on windowsill, singing Moon River. It’s the perfect place for any rising star to throw a party.

      3. Whatever you do, don’t go upstairs. Miranda Priestly lived in this Upper East Side apartment and would commute to Runway Magazine to wreck havoc on Andy, Emily, and the rest of her team. That’s all.

      4. Monica’s rent controlled apartment was the perfect spot for all of her Friends. The gang (and a few ducks) lived in this Greenwich Village building. Note: Don’t rearrange Monica’s furniture.

      5. There’s no need to be mad. When he wasn’t busy at Sterling Cooper & Partners, creating the best ads in the business, or visiting his wife Megan on the West Coast, Don Draper lived lavishly in this apartment building located in Greenwich Village.

No matter where you go in New York City, there is bound to be a familiar apartment that brings nostalgic memories of your favorite television characters.
