6 Essentials for an In-Home Movie Theater

January 22, 2016 By Casey Danton

While winter weather can make going outside seem less than inviting, you can entertain your family indoors with your favorite movies and shows in a home theater. With a little help, your theater setup might make the cold a little more bearable. Here are six must-haves for your home theater.

      1. Theater Seating
Comfortable leather recliners with cushy armrests are a staple of any home theater. The amount of seats is reliant on the size of your space; viewers shouldn’t feel too cramped. Also, the distance you place them from your screen depends on the screen’s size. An easy way to determine seat distance is to take the horizontal length of your screen and multiply it by two to get the minimum distance. Multiply it by five to get the maximum distance. For example: A 60-inch screen would have a minimum distance of 120 inches, or ten feet, and a maximum distance of 300 inches, or 25 feet.

      2. Video Projector
Installing a quality video projector can ensure that you and your viewers enjoy the best picture possible. Pay attention to the projector’s throw distance, or the distance at which it should be placed away from your screen. Also, consider how far down you should hang your projector and at what angle to tilt it. Most projectors have vertical lens shift, which allows you to adjust the projection regardless of how you mount your projector. For those that don’t, hang your projector with an extension pipe so that you can adjust the hanging distance to perfect the projected image.

      3. Projector Screen and Lighting
For screen placement, pick a wall where light does not fall on it directly. You can even paint your walls a dark color to avoid glare. Mount the screen on your wall so the bottom is between two or three feet off the ground. This helps every seat in your theater achieve the perfect view. Try adding dimmable overhead lights to add an authentic cinema feeling.

      4. Surround Sound
The most common speaker system for home theaters is 5.1 surround sound. This six-speaker system is comprised of five full-range speakers and one low-range speaker known as the woofer. The ideal setup for 5.1 surround sound is three speakers and the woofer toward the front of the room, with the remaining two on either side of the back end of the room. Place each speaker at least 20 inches from the wall. If six speakers seem excessive, try a simple three speaker setup with a speaker in front of your screen and two others to the left and right.

      5. Sound Paneling and Acoustics
Rectangular windowless rooms generally have better acoustics than square ones, but you might not be able to remodel just for your home theater. Sound absorption panels to prevent echoes, although standard dry wall paneling is usually adequate acoustic material for home theaters. Installing carpeting may also improve the acoustics of your in-home theater and add a level of comfort for viewers.

      6. Mini Fridge
Keep a small refrigerator in your home theater and stock it with refreshments that are easily accessible. After all, you won’t have to stand in line and worry about missing your movie when you’re home! You may also want to stock old movie favorites like popcorn and candy in a non-refrigerated unit in the theater. Just don’t eat too loudly during the movie.

With these home theater features, being snowed in this winter might not seem so bad!

      Freaky Friday House Superstitions Debunked

      March 12, 2015 By CENTURY 21

Beware of the black cat! Whether you call them superstitions, old wives’ tales, or tall tales, there are so many spooky superstitions that have been passed down from generation to generation.

There are some common superstitions that can strike no matter where you are — for example, walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, and black cats, can all cause bad luck. Did you know that there are also common superstitions that occur inside a home? Don’t worry, here are some helpful tips.

      1. Don’t move an old broom: If you’re moving into a new house, it is said to never bring your old broom with you. It’s believed that all of your bad luck will come with you into the new home. Out with the old, in with the new. Buy a new broom for your new home. (House Logic)

      2. Say no to sharp objects: Don’t give or receive knives and other sharp objects as gifts. According to Apartment Guide’s Courtney Craig, “It symbolizes a cutting of your friendship – in other words, your friend will soon become an enemy, according to Italian folklore. If you must accept it, pay the giver a penny, which will reverse the curse.” We know what we won’t be bringing to housewarming parties! (Apartment Guide)

      3. No shoes on the table: Never put shoes on a table because it will bring you bad luck. It’s also unsanitary, this is a good rule to follow whether you believe in superstitions or not. (RealEstate.com)

      4. Beware of multiples of three: It’s important to stay away from staircases that have steps in multiples of three. If you can, stay away from all odd number stairs, since multiples of three are said to be the number one cause of bad luck. It’s best to have even numbers all around your home, especially on your stairs. (Apartment Guide)

      5. Carry rice into your home: If you’re moving into a new home, congratulations! Carry a full container of rice the first time you walk through the threshold. Rice is said to bring prosperity and peace, which is why people throw rice at weddings. Bringing uncooked rice into your home can be a recipe for happiness (and risotto). (Apartment Guide)

      6. Paint your front porch blue: Legend says that if you paint your front porch blue, it will keep ghosts away. According to the superstition, ghosts can’t cross water. The blue paint will confuse the ghosts into thinking your porch is a body of water and they’ll stay away. You may want to quit your day job in favor of painting porches and ghost busting. (House Logic)

      7. Scatter coins in your living room: Scattering coins in your living room is good luck. On the first day of living in your new home, throw some coins on the floor and prosperity may come to you. (Apartment Guide)

Follow these tips and you might get lucky in your new home.

If Igloos Had Real Estate Listings

      December 15, 2014 By CENTURY 21

The latest trend in real estate may be a little chilling to some people. These homes are the coolest thing on the market right now, and the best part is that there’s no need to worry about shoveling snow. Igloo homes are the next big thing.

Here are some igloo homes for every cool family:

      1. This igloo comes complete with central AC and you’ll decrease your electrical bill because there is no need for a fridge.

      2. You won’t have to ask your neighbor for ice cubes when you live in this abode. You may, however, have to ask for extra blankets.

      3. Wouldn’t it be great to never have to worry about preparing for a blizzard? This igloo mansion allows for that luxury, along with other amenities including a gym where you’ll never sweat, the largest freezer known to man, and a lower energy bill.

      4. Winterizing your home is no longer an issue in this ice palace. This home comes complete with an ice throne, a frozen pool (aka skating rink), and an icicle garden. There is also a gorgeous faux fireplace.

      5. Who needs a treehouse when you have a snowy hideaway in your backyard. This little igloo is great for escaping when you need a break from all the holiday cheer. Keep a stash of ice cream and drinks along with a sweatshirt or two.

When you buy one of these homes you’ll automatically be the coolest family on the block.

Let the Games Begin: Which District Should You Live In?

      November 21, 2014 By CENTURY 21

May the odds be ever in your favor!

It’s the time of the year when your favorite movie franchises hit the big screen. Whether it’s vampires, wizards, or victors, you can always identify with one of your favorite characters (even if you don’t agree with their personal aspirations). In this case, you may be able to identify with a particular district because each one is different and unique in its own way.

We’re not saying we’d want to participate in the ever famous Games, but take the quiz and keep track of your answers to figure out which district of Panem you belong to!

      1. Which material do you prefer to have in your home?

      1. Marble
      2. Wood
      3. Water
      4. Stone

      2. If you could decorate with only one color, which would you choose?

      1. Pink
      2. Brown
      3. Blue
      4. Black

      3. What is your favorite food to make?

      1. Caviar
      2. Fish
      3. Chili
      4. Bread

      4. What is your favorite activity?

      1. Interior Design
      2. Swimming
      3. Camping
      4. Hunting

Now it’s time for your results…

If you chose mostly As, you belong in The Capitol!

You enjoy the finer things in life and are more creative than most of your contemporaries. You love being in control, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

If you chose mostly Bs, you belong in District 4!

District 4 is the fishing district so if you love the water, you belong here! Your parents were helping you achieve their your dream career path since you could walk. You follow along (for the most part) but you have rebellious side that comes out when tested.

If you chose mostly C, you belong in District 7!

You’ve had an ax to grind with people for as long as you can remember. You may have been the tree in your school play every single year. This is the district responsible for lumber and wood. If you adore being outdoors and love nature, District 7 is the place for you.

If you chose mostly D, you belong in District 12!

Well aren’t you a regular Katniss Everdeen! District 12 is the coal mining district but also home to the girl on fire. You may not have had a lot of money growing up, but you know how to make do. You’re decisive and you’re never on the fence (partially because it is an electric fence…).

      Answer Key

      7-12: You’re Jerry!

“Not that there’s anything wrong with that!”

“I invented ‘It’s not you, it’s me’! No one tells me it’s them. If it’s anyone, it’s me!”

      19-24: You’re Elaine!

      “Yada, yada, yada.”

5 Atlanta Homes Worthy of a Real Housewife

      November 9, 2014 By CENTURY 21

They’re back. There are “real housewives” in Atlanta and they are gracing small screens around the world. We have listings that would be fit for almost every “real housewife”. They have enough rooms to fit their family and their extra-large egos. Don’t be Tardy for the Party, let’s take a look at the houses right now.

      1. This sprawling mansion has a ballroom, a cigar room, a theater, two gyms, seven kitchens, a recording studio, an outdoor living area with a magnificent pool, a wellness center, nail salon, and hair salon. Kim could style her wig, get a manicure, and record hits like Google Me, Tardy for the Party, and Love Me First from the comfort of her own home.

      2.  This mansion has a movie theater that is perfect for hosting advance screenings of Glee, Dancing with the Stars, and The Celebrity Apprentice 4. This home also has seven bedrooms, a gym, a ballroom, two kitchens, and a spa.

      3. It will take a lot of “Bills Bills Bills” to buy this home. There is a walk in closet but Kandi isn’t a doctor so there will be No Scrubs. This home isn’t short of rooms, it has eight bedrooms, a movie theater, a recording studio, a pool, and two gyms.

      4. Oh sheesh, Sherre could definitely live in this ten bedroom mansion. This mansion has space for all of her fashion designs, daughters, and enough closet space for any skeletons she may be harboring. We hope her mantra, “Who gonna check me, boo,” is cross stitched on a pillow or two throughout the house.

      5. Cynthia could host all the Cosby’s in this eight bedroom home. She can even throw a Cosby marathon in her own movie theater. We wouldn’t be surprised to find a runway or two in this supermodel’s super swanky home. When she isn’t in NYC or Paris for Fashion Week, she can be found lounging in her spa, getting ready in her walk in closet, working out at the gym or spending time at her husband’s bar.

Pass the popcorn and champagne, please! It’s time to catch up with our guilty pleasure.

      For entertainment purposes only.

Carrie, Seinfeld, and Friends: NYC Apartments Straight From the Screen.

      November 4, 2014 By CENTURY 21

It’s the city that never sleeps, the concrete jungle where dreams are made up, and the backdrop for so many iconic television shows and movies. If you take a walk or hail a cab you may spot one of these iconic apartments.

      1. Carrie Bradshaw wrote, slept, and stored sweaters in the oven of this charming West Village townhouse. We can picture her falling in love, hosting Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, and storing her Manolos here. We had to find an image of the townhouse next door because the Google Street View is blurred out for privacy reasons.

      2. You could find Holly Golightly sleeping in this Lexington Avenue apartment with Cat. We could just imagine Ms. Golightly sitting on windowsill, singing Moon River. It’s the perfect place for any rising star to throw a party.

      3. Whatever you do, don’t go upstairs. Miranda Priestly lived in this Upper East Side apartment and would commute to Runway Magazine to wreck havoc on Andy, Emily, and the rest of her team. That’s all.

      4. Monica’s rent controlled apartment was the perfect spot for all of her Friends. The gang (and a few ducks) lived in this Greenwich Village building. Note: Don’t rearrange Monica’s furniture.

      5. There’s no need to be mad. When he wasn’t busy at Sterling Cooper & Partners, creating the best ads in the business, or visiting his wife Megan on the West Coast, Don Draper lived lavishly in this apartment building located in Greenwich Village.

No matter where you go in New York City, there is bound to be a familiar apartment that brings nostalgic memories of your favorite television characters.

How to Turn Your Home Into the Ultimate Haunted House

      October 27, 2014 By CENTURY 21

Trick-or-treat! Halloween is around the corner and, besides watching horror movies, the best way to get into true spooky spirit is to decorate. Pick pumpkins for a hint of Halloween spirit, or put in a lot of effort so that you have the spookiest house on the block. WARNING: Even the bravest trick-or-treaters may stay away this year.

      1. Pick a theme: You may want to pick a unique theme such as a haunted graveyard or a vampire’s den. Staying within a theme will make it easier to find the right decorations and make your house stand out.

      2. Eerie atmosphere: Attack the five senses. Create an eerie feeling in your home by hanging dimmed twinkle lights, setting up a smoke machine, and adding sound effects like screams and ominous music. You’ll spook your guests the moment they walk through the door!

      3. Creative, scary props: Mix and match with bigger and smaller props. For the bigger ones, choose something that will bring a spookier feel to the house, like (fake) body parts strewn across the room or hologram wall photos that seem to be staring into your soul. Choose smaller props like (fake) spider webs, a (fake) pool of blood, or even (fake) hanging bats.

      4. Dress up: Ask family, friends, and neighbors to help scare your guests. Ask them to dress up as spooky creatures that match your theme.

      5. Main attraction: Having a big finish at the end of your haunted house can be the icing on the (poisonous) cake. Set up something big that will give your guests goose bumps, like a haunted laboratory with a monster, or a graveyard scene.

Get ready to scare anyone who is brave enough to enter. You may end up having a lot of leftover candy to eat. The scariest thing in your future may be a trip to the dentist.
