The Formula for Creating a Luxury Bath

February 20, 2019 By Ariel Jordan

Amy Vermillion may have over 20 years of design experience, but even she knows that designing a luxury bath can be a daunting experience.

Although luxury means different things to different people, the Charlotte, N.C.-based Vermillion says that there are certain elements that need to be included in a luxury bath no matter what the definition is. Here’s what Vermillion says her clients demand in their baths:

      • A great bathing experience. Residents want to be pampered, whether they’re taking a bath or shower. But everyone has different needs. Do you want a soft or brisk shower spray? Multiple showerheads, body sprays, music or lighting? Vermillion always includes a hand shower on a slide bar for times clients just want to rinse off without washing their hair.
      • Fine fixtures. Vermillion refers to faucets as “the jewelry of the bathroom.” She looks for clean lines, interesting geometry and beautiful finishes. Nickel is one of her favorites. Vermillion recommends ROHL faucets not just because they are stylish but because they are also relatively maintenance-free.
      • A tankless water heater. This may not instantly spring to mind when you think of luxury in the bathroom, but a tankless water heater gives you unlimited hot water without a wait. Cold showers become a thing of the past!

Bathroom Makeover: 4 Tips to Spruce It Up

January 4, 2016 By Casey Danton

Is your bathroom looking a bit dated? Whether on display for an open house or just there for guest use, it might be time to give the room a makeover! If completely remodeling isn’t feasible, there are still ways to update. Try these four tips that may help to spruce up your place without committing large amounts of your time and money.

      Frost Windows

Since bathrooms tend to be smaller, they need as much natural light as they can get. While covering up bathroom windows with curtains is essential for privacy, you’re blocking precious sunlight. Instead, try frosting your windows for maximum light while maintaining your privacy.

      Replace Showerheads

Still stuck with the same showerhead that was there when you moved in? Consider replacing it. It’s an easy installation that may make all the difference. Look for a showerhead with settings for water pressure and flow so that each member of your family can choose their own preferences.

      Update Towel Racks

While towel racks and other hardware in your bathroom don’t exactly expire, their styles might. Browse options available across all types of racks, such as free standing, wall mounted, and over the door, to find a more current look that fits your home decor personality.  Visitors may notice that new pieces give an updated look to the entire room.

      Add Fresh Linens

When was the last time you bought new bathroom linens? If you’re not sure, then it’s time for new ones. Set your new, fluffy towels on display (on that stylish towel rack you just installed) for a fresher look. Make sure to invest in a couple extra for any overnight guests to use.

You might be surprised with how these quick fixes can give new life to an older looking bathroom. Get started today!

5 Affordable Ways to Upgrade Your Bathroom

September 14, 2015 By Casey Danton

When you’re planning a remodel, the bathroom is not always the first area you think of. However, if your bathroom is causing you strife, you may be able to make some simple, fast, and affordable changes to upgrade it. You don’t need to do anything drastic like replacing the whole shower. Your bathroom may look like it appeared right off of your Pinterest board with just a few changes.

      Draw Attention to the Mirror

The mirror is one of the key focal points of a bathroom. If your bathroom mirror isn’t that exciting, there’s a simple fix. Look for an interesting frame that will cause the mirror to pop. This may draw attention away from the less interesting parts of the room.

      Coordinate Your Accents

If you choose one metal for all of your accents, you may be able to maintain a consistent aesthetic. Pick silver, gold, bronze, or platinum for drawer handles, towel racks, light fixtures, faucets, and even toothbrush holders. Little changes may tie everything together nicely.

      Try Accent Tiling

Tiles can be expensive, especially if you want something fancy. If you choose to use pricey tiles, stick to just one area of the bathroom like the floor, the countertop, or the inside of the shower. Arrange the fancy tiles that you love in an interesting pattern around the plainer ones.

      Re-grout

The simplest step is often forgotten. If your bathroom is feeling dingy, it might be because you haven’t updated your caulk or grout. Clean, white lines around the tub and sink may make a huge difference, and it’s a quick and inexpensive fix.

      Refinish the Tub

If your bathtub is causing you stress, you don’t necessarily need to replace it. Instead, look into a cheaper option: refinishing it. You may be able to do the entire thing by yourself. It could take some time and effort, but it may also save you money.

These five tips may help you makeover your bathroom…without breaking the bank.

Ask Our Expert: Budget Friendly Bathroom Update

      September 6, 2014 By CENTURY 21

Q: Could you suggest some ways to update a bath without completely remodeling?

-Brenda Lee, CENTURY 21 Partners, Owensboro, KY

A: Kitchens and bathrooms are key rooms that are first to date a house. A complete remodel in tight times can be costly. There are, however, a few designer tricks that can put a fresh spin on an outdated bathroom.

Walls: Nothing freshens a space more than a coat of paint. When picking your palette, think “spa.” Wall colors such a deep taupe, shale blue, and rich golden tan always work because they’re nature-inspired. Pair with soft white trim and you’re good to go.

Cabinets: Perk up dark wood cabinets by simply painting them the same color as white or cream trim. Complete the update with modern, oversized hardware. Brushed chrome or nickel finishes are timeless and add sparkle to the space.

Light Fixtures: Replace cold overhead lights with inexpensive track lights in the same color as your ceiling. Use dimmer switches and halogen bulbs to cast arcs of light only where you need them without destroying the mood of the space.

Mirrors: In tight quarters add full-length mirrors framed in molding that matches the room’s trim. This will visually stretch and add more “architecture” to the room.

Accessories: Fresh white terrycloth is a classic touch that says “spa”—so no more fussy accent towels that could simply date the space. Add great looking regional or shore-inspired black-and-white photography framed in nickel to match your new hardware. Hit it with a track spotlight, and it all comes together.

These little touches can help freshen and update any bathroom without breaking the bank. You can do it!

Done in One Hour: How to Install a Faucet

      August 16, 2014 By CENTURY 21

Replacing an old, inefficient faucet with one that’s equipped to save water can reduce your consumption by up to 80 percent. When you shop, look for logos such as Eco-Friendly, Energy Star, and Water Sense; these logos designate environmentally conscious features, including low-flow aerators and touchless controls. Donate your old fixture to a good cause (try Habitat for Humanity) or take it to a local recycling center (look in the Yellow Pages). Learn more about water saving products and techniques.

Here is how to install your eco-friendly faucet.

      Supplies and Tools:

      -Crescent or basin wrench
      -Water pump pliers
      -Bucket
      -Towel

      Step-By-Step Instructions:

      1) Shut off the water supply. The copper lines that supply hot and cold water to the sink often have shutoff valves under the sink. Turn them off. In some homes, you may need to turn off water elsewhere, such as the lines in the basement that lead to the sink. Once the water supply is off, turn the faucet on to let water and pressure drain from the lines.

      2) Disconnect the existing faucet from the plumbing. Use a crescent wrench (or a basin wrench if the nuts are difficult to reach) to disconnect the faucet from the supply lines. Then disconnect the sink from the drainpipes using water pump pliers. Keep a bucket and towel handy to clean up the water that will, inevitably, spill from pipes.

      3) Install the faucet on the sink. Follow the installation instructions for your specific faucet. The process typically involves laying a gasket on the sink, then setting the faucet on top of the gasket with its tailpieces extending through the sink’s holes. Tightening a nut on the underside of the sink secures the faucet to the sink.

Complete these steps, then stand back and enjoy your brand new faucet!
